Kiffy’s Take

How we did we get from no coaching changes in the SEC last year to perhaps up to half the league changing coaches this year? I think the primary driver is the clarity on the revenue sharing question brought about by the House settlement. Now that numbers are on paper, schools know what their financial commitments will be and the blue bloods are eager to re-assert their dominance. The playoff is adding a lot of pressure as well. Bowl games are no longer considered markers of success for the top programs. And with just 12 slots available, too many of them are already getting left out. It’s one reason why I think the move to 16 happens sooner rather than later and maybe that relieves some of the pressure.

These things are going to bounce back and forth and follow the events of the day to a large degree and public sentiment. As late as last week, we started hearing Drinkwitz emerging as a plan B for Kiffin. It’s probably too early to lock that in, but it is an indication that the events of the weekend - Ole Miss’ win over OU and LSUs entry into the coaching search field this cycle - add complications to what appeared to be a viable path for Kiffin to Florida a week ago.
